philips-tar1609-00
Philips TAR1609/00 Portable AM/FM Radio with Torch

The Philips TAR1609/00 combines an AM/FM radio with a torch and an audible and flashing SOS function. Analogue tuning and volume controls sit alongside an extendable antenna, while an adjustable hand strap helps with carrying. Its single 57 mm driver produces mono sound.

The built-in 3.7 V, 2000 mAh battery charges through USB-C, with a full charging time of 3.5 hours. At 50% volume, Philips quotes up to 32 hours from that battery or up to 12 hours from three separately purchased AAA cells. The solar panel and hand crank are intended for emergency charging. USB device charging is limited to 5 V, 0.5 A.

For ordinary listening, use the radio's rechargeable battery or the supported separate AAA cells. The crank and solar functions provide additional emergency charging routes, but their output depends on effort, light and time rather than replacing a normal mains charging session at a fixed rate. The USB-A output is limited to the 5 V, 0.5 A rating, so it should not be presented as a fast laptop charger. The torch and SOS functions add separate emergency signalling options. Keep the unit dry and use it within the instructions; no weatherproof rating is assumed.

What it is

A portable AM/FM radio with torch, audible/flashing SOS signal and several charging options.

What it does

A portable AM/FM radio with torch, audible/flashing SOS signal and several charging options.

Good for

Portable radio listening, local lighting and backup charging of compatible devices.

Who it suits

Portable radio listening, local lighting and backup charging of compatible devices.

How it works

The Philips TAR1609/00 combines an AM/FM radio with a torch and an audible and flashing SOS function.
