The LabelWriter 550 prints addresses, file labels, name badges and similar labels from a computer over USB. Its direct-thermal print head marks specially prepared label media, so there is no ink or toner cartridge. DYMO Connect for Desktop provides label design and printing tools for compatible Windows and Mac computers.
Automatic Label Recognition reports the type, size and remaining count of a genuine DYMO LW roll to the software. This model works only with authentic DYMO LW labels; third-party or older incompatible media should not be assumed to work. Its maximum is 62 standard labels per minute and 56 mm of printable width.
The 550 has USB connectivity. Ethernet belongs to the 550 Turbo and 5XL variants, not this model. Install the software before connecting the printer, then use its supplied adapter, power cord and USB cable.
The label-recognition system is useful for checking the installed roll and remaining stock in software, but it also makes consumable compatibility a central buying consideration. A lower-cost third-party roll should not be assumed to work. This ANZ 550 model uses USB only; networking features from the Turbo or 5XL should not be transferred to it.
